Installation & Setup

Overview for IT Support / System Administrator

  • Each workstation requires a licence key in order to use the program;
  • Matters are contained in the database file > ConveyCalc4.MDB;
  • The database files > “ConveyCalc4.MDB”, “ConveyCalc4.BAK” (periodic automatic backup) and “System.MDW” must always be in the same “..\LegalPax Calculator” folder (whether on the workstation or on a server);
  • To ascertain which database the program files are using <Click here>
  • Depending on how the program was installed, there may be a blank database (126kb in size) in the "..\LegalPax Calculator" folder of a workstation. We recommend you delete blank databases. If you are in any doubt as to whether the database is blank, rename it and check whether users can still acccess their matters. If so, the database can be safely deleted.

Activating the calculator / Licence Key

Activation requires the completion of a "licence key". Without the licence key, the calculator will run in demonstation mode and no more than 4 matters can be entered. Each licence key is unique to the computer on which the calculator is installed. The licence key is provided at the time of purchase.

If the calculator is to be moved to a different computer, a new licence key will be required (see Moving the calculator to another computer).

Moving the calculator to another computer

The program cannot be COPIED to another computer. It must be INSTALLED and for that you will require the installation program (ie installation CD or email) we provided at the time of purchase. We regret we do not provide replacements of versions older than the current version.

Install the program on the new computer, and then email us at legalpax@leap.com.au with the following -

  • Your firm name and address
  • Version of calculator
  • Old computer's serial number and licence key (available from the Help menu > Licence Key)
  • New computer's serial number (as shown when you first start the program after installation)
  • Confirmation that the total number of users installed will not exceed the number licensed (emails which do not contain this confirmation will not be actioned)

When you have received the new licence key -

  • If you have a 1 user licence, make a backup copy of the "ConveyCalc4.MDB" file located in the "..\LegalPax Calculator" folder) on the old computer;
  • If you have a multi-user licence, make a backup copy of the "ConveyCalc4.MDB" file located in the shared "..\LegalPax Calculator" folder (for more information see Where does the program store the matters);
  • Copy that "ConveyCalc4.MDB" file to the new computer, replacing the existing file when prompted;
  • Uninstall the LegalPax Setlement Calculator from the old computer (All Programs > LegalPax Settlement Calculator > Uninstall);
  • Delete the "..\LegalPax Calculator" folder on the old computer.

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION: "ConveyCalc4.MDB" is the file which contains all your matters. If you have more than one copy of this file, keep a copy of all. The file which contains your matters will have a recent date and be larger than 126kb in size. If you have any difficulty, please refer this help information to your IT support.

Moving the database to a server

This is usually done to allow for easy backup or in the case of multiple users, to be able to share the database (ie access each others matters).

1. Create a “\LegalPax Calculator” folder on the server;
2. Move the “ConveyCalc4.MDB”, “ConveyCalc4.BAK”, and “system.mdw” files to the new folder on the server;
3. Start LegalPax Calculator;
4. Users will be prompted to "Establish connection to database" > browse to the "ConveyCalc4.MDB" file on the server and click OK;

Click on the Help menu > Setup Info > “Database Path=” to verify the new path to the "\LegalPax Calculator" folder on the server (ie the new location).

Adding another user

Each user requires a licence and a licence key. To add a new user, please complete and forward the Order Form above.

BEFORE sending the Order Form, please ensure that you have the installation CD or installation email we sent you when you first purchased this version. If you do not have the installation files, you will be not be able to add a new user.

Replacements

We regret we are unable to provide replacements. You can however upgrade to the current version.

Backups

Data loss can occur for any number of reasons.  We recommend that you -

  • Keep the original program CD or upgrade email in a safe place so the program can be reinstalled; and
  • Make regular backups of the "..\LegalPax Calculator" folder

Please Note: Your data is stored in the file > "ConveyCalc4.MDB" - make regular backups of that file.

What versions can be upgraded

Versions 4 and 5 can be upgraded. (Version 3 cannot be upgraded.)

Please note that email installation instructions only are provided when you purchase an upgrade.

Installing calculator under Microsoft Vista

Under Windows Vista, install actions that require administrative privileges can be blocked.

To install, you may need to turn off the User Access Control (UAC) within Vista (Control Panel > User Accounts > Turn User Account Control On or Off > ….) and restart the computer. Note: You should NOT make any changes to your computer unless authorised by your system administrator or IT support.

The workstation software should be installed to "C:\LegalPax Calculator".  Do NOT install off the "\Program Files" folder as you will have limited read/write access.  You must have read/write access to the "C:\LegalPax Calculator" folder.

Once installed, ensure that the appropriate run access is given to ALL the LegalPax Calculator executables (located in the "C:\LegalPax Calculator " folder. Ensure they are in the Exception List in any anti-virus software.

Vista has numerous security features.  You will require Vista qualified technical support personnel.

Installing calculator under Windows 7

We do not provide support for the LegalPax Settlement Calulator under Windows 7. The Calculator is an XP compatible program. Whilst the program has been tested with Windows 7 as at January 2011, Microsoft may withdraw support for XP program features at any time. The program also uses third party objects which may not continue to be supported. If you do install the program under Windows 7, you should be aware of the following -

  • You must have Windows 7 Professional version installed
  • The program must be installed as an XP compatible program (consult your Windows documentation for further information)
  • Ensure you have the necessary permissions to run the program

Installing in a Terminal Server environment

Question

The program can be installed on a Terminal Server provided you have purchased a Site Licence.

Where does the program store the matters

Restoring the database

Details

The database used by the program is called "ConveyCalc4.MDB". Regular backups should be made of this data file so that if the database fails, it can be restored from recent backup.

No backup available to restore?

Periodic backups are made of the database. Where there is no available recent backup of the "ConveyCalc4.MDB" file, the ".BAK" file can be restored by renaming the extension from ".BAK" TO ".MDB" however it will not contain any matters which have been entered since the file date of the ".BAK" file. Check you have access to your matters - then MAKE A BACKUP.
